Over the lockdown period, I attended online professional learning about supporting children's writing through play.
This has been a big focus of our school day.
Children can choose from a variety of writing tools - pens, pencils, sharpies, clipboards, old exercise books, etc to write what they need to for their play. Some of the writing has been signs, shopping lists, letters to Mum or Dad, etc.
Children are enjoying writing for a purpose in their play, this makes their writing meaningful and authentic. Children choose to write by themselves, or with me to support. There are specific stages of development that occur with children's writing, and writing this way enables me to see these and support the child to the next stage.
Welcome to Room 1. We are a class of New Entrant and Year 1 learners in a play based learning environment. We enjoy sharing our learning and our experiences so please read our blog posts and don't forget to leave a comment or a question.

Coming to School on Monday
When you come to school on Monday, Mum or Dad, or Koro, Nanny, Aunty - whoever drops you off, will drop you off by the crossing.
Then Pippa, or Whaea Sheryl, or Mrs Bobsein, Mrs McKenzie, or Ms O'Neil, will take you across the road to the school gate.
Then you can walk bravely by yourself, and I will see you on the deck of Room 1!

Mother's Day
This Sunday it is Mother's Day.
Think of something special you can do for your Mum.
It might be:
- make breakfast in bed
- make a card
- draw a special picture
- give Mum a massage
Here is a lovely story by Anthony Browne about My Mum.
Don't forget to take a photo and record what you do for your Mum.
