Kupe and Te Wheke

We are already into week 3 of the term!

 We have been learning about the navigator Kupe, who was the first person to come to Aotearoa.  We have been learning about the story of Kupe, fighting the giant wheke (octopus).  Children have demonstrated their learning and understanding of the story through writing, telling stories, art, and play. 

Writing:

Kupe was hurting wheke.  He chased him all the way to Aotearoa. 

He went back and told the people to come to Aotearoa.

Kupe destroyed the octopus because he was evil and eating all the fish.

Kupe was looking at the stars and he was a scientist.

 Kupe fought the giant octopus because the octopus was eating his fish and he made Kupe angry. 

Kupe said, “follow that giant octopus.”

Kupe went to Aotearoa.  He was the first one to come to Aotearoa. 

He told more people to come on a big waka.

Kupe fought the octopus because he was eating the fish.

Kupe saw land the long white cloud, Aotearoa.

It was really noisy with lots of birds and insects.

Kupe was a scientist because he said “that way or that way” with the stars.

Kupe fought a giant octopus.

He said, “come on let’s go to the big white cloud” because they wanted to live there.

They were the first ones to live there.

The other people came and said “hey we want to live here” and the other people said, “we were here first.”  But they can both live in a different kind of house.

 It was great to see everyone dressed up!  We had a lot of fun in our costumes.

Marae writing

Yesterday we went on the bus to Hukanui Marae.  

We sat on the mat and we waited with our bags on.

We went into the wharenui and we saw all the photos of the people who had passed away.

We had a kai.

Then we drew a picture of the waharoa.

Then we went back to school on the bus.

Hukanui Marae

 Our trip to Hukanui Marae was exciting.

We went on the bus.  We had to wait quietly to go onto the marae.  The kuia called us on with a karanga.  We sat on the mats and listened to Koro.

Then we went inside the wharenui - Tuturuapapa. We listened to Koro talk about the marae.

We then had a kai and did some sketching of the waharoa.

We watched the big kids performing kapa haka, then we went home.
