Carving with Ronnie

We have been lucky to have a carver working at school.
His name is Ronnie.
We went to visit Ronnie in Rm 6 to see him carving.

When we came back to class we wrote about visiting Ronnie, and what we saw.

I saw the carving.

I saw koru patterns.

Kumara Chips

Recently we dug up our kumara in the kitchen garden.
Our room won the school competition for the heaviest kumara grown.

 With our kumara and some pumpkin Ms. Jones had grown, we made kumara and pumpkin chips to share in our Kiwi hub.

Kowhai Museum Trip

Last Tuesday we walked across Anzac Parade Bridge and down to Te Whare Taonga o Waikato (Waikato Museum).
We were there to find out about the great waka Te Winika, learn about the carvings and Te Ao Maori.

Te Winika was found at Port Waikato.

The tail is made from flax and
drapes in the water.

This is a tree similar to that from
which Te Winika was made.

Looking onto the river,
and if you look carefully you can see
Hamilton East School and the Redwood Tree.

The eyes are made from albatross feathers. 

The children were interested to
see paua shells as eyes.

Women are significant in the carvings.

We had a chance to draw patterns too.

Project Energize - Healthy Drinks

Zane and Jono came to school this week to talk about healthy drinks.

We had to guess which was the healthiest drink and put them in order from healthiest drink to least healthiest drink.

Then Zane asked us to guess how much sugar there is in all of these drinks.  We knew there is no sugar in water, but it was hard to guess all the other drinks.  

We also learnt that it is only a juice drink if it has juice written on the carton - not fruit drink.  This is not juice.

Wow! There is so much sugar in fizzy drinks!  Zane also told us that drinks such as V and Mother have warnings on the can that they are not for children.  
We talked about Hamilton East being a 'water only' school.

Then we sorted the drinks into 3 categories - occasionally, sometimes and everyday.

Jono gave us a poster to put up in out room so we can remember how much sugar is in some drinks, and that it is healthiest to drink everyday drinks such as milk and water.
